An Easy Reroute

Gotta love it when the reroute is 12 miles shorter and 3000 feet less climbing than the original plan.  As I mentioned yesterday, the road through Lassen Volcanic National Park is still blocked by snow so we had to go around to the east of the park.  I'm sure we gave up some spectacular views up close and personal with Mt Lassen, but the reroute was no hardship.

We had an early start to the day. I rolled out about 6:40. Sunny skies but only about 5C. Right off we rode by the north end of Lake Almanor. Saw some pelicans enjoying an early morning swim.

Looking behind, we also had a good view of Mt Lassen.

We rode east about 13 miles on SR 36 before turning north onto our own private highway, A21, for about 18 miles. Probably only a dozen vehicles passed by in all that time.  Nice surface and lovely pine forest, although it had been selectively logged.

We turned NW onto SR 44 at about 32 miles and the views opened up nicely. Passed by Polson  Lake, which had some nice reflections.

A little further down the road and a great view of Mt Lassen.

Around this time we started a five mile downhill that gradually levelled out but continued on a downhill trend almost all the way to Burney.

Saw our first views of Mt Shasta, which we can also see from our hotel room tonight.

Miles and miles away from Lassen and we're still seeing volcanic rock. The last series of eruptions was 1914 to 1921. Not sure if this rock is older than that.

I'm not sure who this fellow is or why he's there, but he seemed photo-worthy.......

At about 82 miles we turned off SR 89 toward Burney. A lovely and quite easy ride today. We are staying at a mom & pop hotel where the wifi is really sketchy. I'm getting frustrated with it so will add the stats later. Rest day tomorrow!

Stats for the day:
139 km / 86 miles from Chester CA to Burney CA
2580 feet up
3980 feet down
Weather:  started about 5C before 7 am. Bright sunshine. Warmed up to mid 20s by early afternoon. A bit of a headwind but not too bad, especially with so much downhill. I think the warmer weather is here to stay for a bit.

  1. The fellow at the end looks like he's just roasted a marshmallow...

Otherwise, pics looks great!! Your re-route seems to have worked out very well indeed.
