Another Lovely Day

Breakfast in the hotel was to be at 7.  I showed up a few minutes to 7 and just Ann, Pam, the guides & SAG driver were there.  We have such a keen group!  After a leisurely breakfast I was second-to-last out of the parking lot.  A chilly start to the ride.  My GPS read about 5C at the start and dropped to -2C before it finally started to warm up again.  We spent pretty much the whole day on SR 89.

We started out in the fog and had just enough hills early in the day to keep us warm.

Much of the first 25 miles was through National Forest lands, which interestingly fall under the Department of Agriculture.  The roads were relatively quiet and just a nice ride through endless forest.  Two areas of road construction, one with a truck escort.  That one was long enough that the next wave of traffic didn't catch up with us for about 10 miles.

We crossed a couple of rivers - the Prosser River and the Little Truckee River, then back up to a SAG stop.  Little snowbanks beside the road were evidence of a recent snowfall.  Local folks tell us that we could not have done yesterday's ride the day before because of the snow.  Thought I had left those issues in Canada - not!

Stopped into a funky little cafe in Sierraville, Smithneck Farms, for cinnamon buns just out of the oven.  How could we possibly say no??

Once down in elevation to Sierraville, we left the forest and entered agricultural territory - horses, cows, sheep and yaks.

Time to de-layer again and up another little hill.  Getting lower, though; the summits are not as high as the last few days.

A final easy 10 miles into the cute little town of Graegle and our accommodation at River Pines resort just beyond town.  Graegle is a former logging town.  There are little former company homes on the main street that are now occupied by small businesses.

A special treat tonight - Gishi & Pam from our Atlantic Coast trip have joined us for the afternoon & for dinner.  Also get to meet Pam's new hubby, Tom.  A great end to a really lovely day.

Stats for the day:
76 km / 47 miles from Truckee CA to Graegle CA
2470 feet up
4014 feet down
Weather: low of -2C and high of 13C.  Mostly sunny.  No wind of consequence.  Pretty nice.........

  1. Great pics as always. I love the scenes of Lake Tahoe. Wow, all that climbing - you all must be sooo strong to get up all those hills! Feel good that you able to do it.

Greetings from the Golden Triangle just finished today. We were hit by continuous rain in the Columbia Valley. But then the Kootenay and Kicking Horse-Bow Valleys were all great. Two Outta Three Ain't Bad in May in the Rockies.
