A Beautiful Canyon Ride

Well, we didn't see enough of Yakima to pass judgement on it.  But we weren't impressed by what we did see.  An error on the cue sheet first thing this morning sent us briefly into another unimpressive area of town.  Since I was last out as usual, people were already headed back by the time I got a few blocks away from the hotel.  We quickly got turned around and headed outta town on SR 823 which brought us to the town of Selah very shortly.  Obviously a big fruit processing base to the economy.

Some nice views and at mile 5 we crossed the Yakima River.

As we turned north onto SR 821 we could see two prominent mountains in the distance.  I'm assuming they were Mt. Adams

And Mt. Rainier.

Lots more orchards and some happy cyclists (Barb, Gail & Diane) enjoying the return of sunshine and an easy ride today.

As the orchards came to an end we prepared to enter Yakima Canyon.

Just a beautiful ride, and so very different from what we've been seeing for so long.  Reminds me of some of our early rides in Southern California.

Not much to report from the day other than I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and had a really pokey day pretty much bringing up the rear.

We're staying in Ellensburg tonight.  I took a spin through the "historic downtown" before checking into the hotel, but it wasn't too exciting.  A nice outdoors shop but otherwise not memorable.

Stats for the day:
64 km / 40 miles from Yakima WA to Ellensburg WA
1783 feet up
1004 feet down
Weather:  ideal.  Bright sunshine once again.  Started out about 15C and went up to the high 20sC.  No too hot; not too cold - just perfect!

  1. Sounds like Goldie Locks... 'not too hot, not too cold, but just right...' Sounds perfect to me.

By the way, just got some pics from Anne Alexander in Canmore. Seems she went on a hike to Healy Pass - there was SNOW on the glacier lilies, trees and even the paintbrush foolish enough to have blossomed this early. After temps in the high 20s earlier in May, they are now back in the low teens. What's with this weather...?

We just had the worst weather weekend ever at the cottage north of Kingston - cloudy, drizzly, and a high of 14c (on the 12th of June!!). Go figure...

  2. Probably too late, but Ellensburg has an train dormitory where we stayed one night as we were headed to Seattle when our grandson was born.
Almost to the end!??? Great job as always!
